The Top 10 Ways to be Effectively Assertive!!!
There are 3 personality types : Aggressive, passive and the ASSERTIVE.
Aggressive people are dominating and often offensive. "What you say is wrong, what I say is right!" best describes their attitude. They always like to win.
Passive people are timid and submissive. They think "what you say is right and I'm wrong!". They lack confidence and always support the dominating ones.
The best personality type is the Assertive type. They are confident and show respect to people who deserve but not at the cost of their own self respect. Their policy is "what you say is right, at the same time, what I say is also right!". While dealing with people they maintain the right balance of being confident enough to be assertive of personal rights and boundaries while respectful of others.
These are the 10 methods, according to Robert G. Jerus, which will enable us to be more assertive thereby maintain a harmonious relation with others.
1. Knowing the distinction between being assertive versus being aggressive or arrogant is very important.Assertive people believe in promoting their own rights rather than stepping on those of others.
2. Having clear boundaries while dealing with others.
If we are clear about our limits and boundaries, others will also come to know about their limits as well.
3. We should let people know your position politely without allowing our position or point of view be ignored. Our needs are also important.
4. We should affirm ourselves and our good qualities with pride and confidence. This will surely boost our self-confidence and positive self-esteem.
5. We should be very clear about what we want. There is a time and a place to go along with others but there is also a time to reach for our own dreams.
6. We should avoid being timid. While aggressiveness steps on the rights of others, being overly timid leads to sacrifice of own rights.
7. A very important point. We should be capable of saying either YES or NO clearly and to be able to stand by our answer. We should develop our own opinions and maintain them.
8. Avoiding arrogance is another important point.Dominance and controlling tendencies create dislike.
9. Others should know our viewpoint and recognize that it is significant.
10.Finally, we should know how to take responsibility for ourselves.
