There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple.
English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France .
Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.
Boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig..

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese.
If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

You fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

When the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP.'

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ?At a meeting, why does a topic come UP?Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?
We call UP our friends.And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car.At other times the little word has real special meaning.People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP!To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary.In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used.It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP.When the sun comes out we say it is clearingUP.
When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP.
When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP,for now my time is UP,so........it is time to shut UP!

Jodi tor daak shune keu naa ashe tobe ekla cholo re

Translation into English

Here is the translation in prose of the Bengali original rendered by Rabindranath Tagore himself.

"If they answer not to thy call walk alone.
If they are afraid and cower mutely facing the wall,
O thou unlucky one,
open thy mind and speak out alone.
If they turn away, and desert you when crossing the wilderness,
O thou unlucky one,
trample the thorns under thy tread,
and along the blood-lined track travel alone.
If they do not hold up the light when the night is troubled with storm,
O thou unlucky one,
with the thunder flame of pain ignite thy own heart
and let it burn alone."

Where the mind is without fear

"Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action --
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake."

Self-Esteem : Characteristics of People with high Self-Esteem

The word ‘Self Esteem’ refers to one’s evaluation of one’s own self. Self Esteem is different from Self Concept. Self Concept is what we think about our own self and Self Esteem is how to ‘estimate’ or ‘judge’ ourselves - good or bad, positive or negative. Self Esteem can be taken as an estimation or evaluation of our own self by us. Self Esteem is an important factor as it directly influences person’s overall behaviour, relationships, academic performance and professional success. Self-worth, Self-regard, Self-respect and Self-integrity are all related concepts of Self-esteem.

Psychologist Branden conceptualized ‘Self Esteem’ as a combination of Self-confidence and Self-respect. According to him, Self-confidence stands for ‘a feeling of personal capacity’ and Self-respect stands for ‘a feeling of personal worth’. “The experience of being competent to cope with the basic challenges and being worth of happiness” is what Branden had to say about Self-esteem.

Our Self Esteem is a result of our upbringing, society, circumstances and experiences of life. Self Esteem can be high or low depending one a person’s way of thinking and understanding of life’s circumstances.

Characteristics of people with high Self Esteem:
1. They understand, believe, like, love, value and trust themselves.
2. They trust their own judgment and act according to it.
3. They defend their own values, principles and opinions whenever faced with opposition.
4. They feel secure of themselves and the choices they make ad never feel guilty for a decision once made.
5. They focus on the present time and don’t waste time pondering over past mistakes and worrying about future challenges.
6. They live in the present but they do plan for the future.
7. They accept differences with others with dignity be it difference of power, position or financial status.
8. They never consider themselves as superior or inferior to others.
9. They are sensitive to others’ feelings and emotions.
10. They never take advantage of others or try to flourish at the expense of others.
11. They believe in collaboration and synergy. They are against unhealthy competition. They believe in creating a win-win situation.
12. They never manipulate others or try to take undue advantage of others.

Every human being craves for social acceptance. Love, respect and security are basic desires of all. A positive or high Self Esteem equips people with confidence and optimism. These qualities enable a person to reach his/her goal and achieve great heights in life. People with high Self Esteem understand that it is the core necessity of a person to be happy. They create several avenues of happiness for them and for those around them. Enhanced Self Esteem leads to positive social relationships which will lead to a harmonious society.

Conscious and concrete steps towards ‘Self-growth’

‘Self-growth’ will happen when we take certain conscious and concrete steps towards improving our selves so as to fit into the concept of our ‘perfect mental image’. But sometimes, our own mind misleads us with a ‘non-achievable creation of self image' and it makes us chase a goal which is actually non-realistic in nature.
We often tend to create an image of yourselves in our minds - an image of perfection and success. And we often compare our ‘mental image of perfection’ with our actual being. This comparison often leads to self criticism and low self esteem.
When we find our actual self, way different from what we wish ourselves to be, we reject ourselves. This unhealthy comparison between the 'actual self' and the 'image of perfect self' results in lower self-esteem. A sense of 'not good enough' is created and we find difficulty in facing the World as it badly hurts our self-respect and self-confidece.
As we go on chasing this goal which may be way beyond our reach, we sometimes even fall with more loss of self esteem. The feeling of ‘not good enough’ is created by our own self. We lack awareness as to how our mind misleads us. This lack of awareness results in wastage of effort towards achieving a goal which is very high. With awareness of these negative emotional outbursts, we can avoid chasing these false images of perfection.
It’s harsh and un-healthy [mentally] to compare ourselves with anyone in this World or even with our own created ‘self of perfection’. To some extent, working constructively towards a desired goal is what is needed but not beyond a certain limit. Some common goals can be to attain perfection in all spheres of life, to become admirable and respectable by one and all, to do well in the field of education, sports or profession. There is a huge craze to attain a perfect slim and slender figure and a flawless complexion. In the process, specially the teenagers, go to the extent of abnormal behaviour with their family members and peers, if they don’t feel themselves adquete enough to face everyone. Real confidence comes from inner beauty and self esteem. We often come across news of teenagers committing suicide for not being able to perform well in their exams. Performance in academics has nothing to do with achievement of success and happiness in life.
The only solution here is to create a positive self esteem. A positive Self Esteem can be created by accepting and loving ourselves just as we are and not judging ourselves with unrealistic parameters.

High Self Esteem leads to High Self Confidence, Success and Happiness
